How to Choose the Right Type of Dental Crown Material

There is a range of dental crown material types, and each has its own advantages and times when it may not be the most ideal. By becoming more familiar with the types of dental crown material options that your cosmetic dentist offers, you can be in a position to make a more informed decision as to which option is most appropriate for you.

Different types of dental crown materials

Cosmetic dentists may recommend a different dental crown material depending on the severity of the tooth damage and where the tooth is located. The following is an overview of four of the most common types of dental crown materials that cosmetic dentists offer.

Ceramic dental crowns

Ceramic dental crowns work best for restoring the size, shape and color of teeth that are more visible, such as the incisors and canines. Their texture and color closely resemble that of natural teeth, and cosmetic dentists can make sure they blend in well with healthy adjacent teeth, ensuring that no one notices that you have a dental crown. The drawback to ceramic dental crowns, however, is that they are not as durable as gold alloy or metal alloy crowns. Subsequently, they are often not recommended for teeth that are used more for crushing food such as premolars and molars.

Metal alloy

Metal alloy crowns are commonly used to restore tooth damage, loose teeth and teeth that are worn down by grinding. They are typically not used for front teeth unless combined with a porcelain material (porcelain fused to metal), but they work well for teeth farther back in the mouth, such as molars and premolars. They blend in better with natural teeth better than gold crowns but not as well as ceramic crowns, although they are much stronger than ceramic.

Porcelain fused to metal

Many dentists recommend porcelain fused to metal, as it combines the best qualities of each type. Porcelain crowns are generally more attractive, but they do not have the durability and strength of metal alloy. Metal alloy dental crowns have strength but are not always as attractive. A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown offers a more attractive and natural appearance, while also remaining strong enough to withstand potential damage and may last longer than ceramic dental crowns.

Gold alloy

Gold alloy dental crowns contain gold and a combination of copper and other metals. They are one of the most durable forms of dental crowns, and they work well for teeth that are used more in the chewing process. However, the most notable and perhaps obvious drawback is the appearance. While some may like the gold tooth look, many do not prefer gold alloy crowns as they do not match the shade of natural teeth, and it is more obvious to others that the person has a dental crown.
