Types of Teeth Whitening Procedures for a Smile Makeover

Teeth whitening treatments can be performed as part of a smile makeover. It is a non-invasive way to drastically enhance the appearance of a person's teeth and patients can have noticeable results after a single treatment.

A smile makeover is a combination of cosmetic treatments done to improve the way a person's teeth and gums look. It often involves the use of treatments such as:

  • Veneers
  • Crowns
  • Implants
  • Dentures
  • Composite bonding
  • Bridges
  • Teeth whitening
  • Gum reshaping

Teeth are constantly under attack from things that can stain and discolor them. There are tannins in many foods and beverages like coffee, tea and red wine, and they alter the color of teeth when consumed regularly. Fortunately, teeth whitening treatments are effective on most types of stains, like stains caused by foods and beverages, smoking and aging.

However, teeth whitening treatments are not effective on stains caused by tooth decay, fluorosis or tetracycline antibiotics. Here are the different types of teeth whitening treatments dentists might use as part of their patient's smile makeover:

In-office teeth whitening

The fastest way to whiten teeth is with an in-office treatment with a dentist. This involves using prescription-grade bleaching products to remove surface stains. These whitening solutions and gels have concentrated amounts of hydrogen peroxide or hydrogen carbamide in them, so they are not sold to the public. They need to be administered by a dentist who will take precautions so the product does not damage the patient's teeth or irritate soft tissues.

There are two main types of in-office whitening treatments: conventional and light-aided whitening. Conventional whitening involves using a customized mouth tray to apply the whitening agent to the patient's teeth. The patient bites down on the mouth guard and keeps it in their mouth for 60 to 90 minutes.

Light-aided whitening involves using an LED or ultraviolet light to speed up the reaction of the whitening agent and the stains on the patient's teeth. The whitening agent is applied to the front of the patient's teeth and the light agitates the solution, leading to faster results. Conventional and light-assisted whitening are equally effective, but the light shortens how long the treatment takes.

At-home whitening kits

Dentists also provide at-home whitening kits that patients can use from the comfort of their homes. These kits come with a customized whitening tray that is used to apply the bleaching agent. The whiteners in these at-home kits are not as concentrated as those used in the dental office, but they are much more concentrated than over-the-counter teeth whiteners.

It can take a couple of weeks for patients to get the desired results with at-home whitening kits, but the job gets done. At-home teeth whitening kits are a great way to maintain the results of professional teeth whitening.
