Best Remedies for a Toothache
When you have a toothache, it’s important to see your dentist as quickly as possible. However, while you’re waiting to get into your dentist, what can you do about the pain? You can use some easy home remedies for toothache pain relief. Try one of these
remedies next time you have a toothache and then schedule an appointment with your dentist as quickly as possible.
OTC Remedies
Over the counter toothache pain relievers and general pain relievers can prove helpful if you’re dealing with a nasty toothache. General over the counter pain relievers, such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, or Aleve can offer you some temporary relief from the
pain that comes with a painful tooth. However, these medications should be used as directed and they won’t fully solve the problem.
You can also find over the counter pain relievers specifically designed to treat toothaches. You’ll find toothache pain relief swabs, creams, liquids, and gels, and they usually have benzocaine in them. Benzocaine is a topical pain reliever that offers
temporary relief from tooth pain and it can help you handle the pain until you’re able to see your dentist.
Home Remedies
A variety of different home remedies can be tried to relieve the pain that comes with a toothache as well. Some home remedies you may want to try include:
- Saltwater – Add several teaspoons of some table salt to a glass of water and mix well. Swish the saltwater around in your mouth as long as possible, but make sure you avoid swallowing the saltwater. The warmth and the salt may help to relieve some
of the pain you’re experiencing.
- Avoidance – Make sure you avoid cold or hot beverages to prevent making the pain of the tooth ache worse. You’ll also want to avoid chewing on ice. Many people find they need to avoid chewing on the side of the problem tooth. Be gentle when brushing
around the affected area.
- Clove Oil – A popular home remedy is clove oil, which is known to help relieve toothache pain. Clove oil includes a natural anesthetic known as eugenol, but you must be very careful when using this oil. Avoid pouring the oil directly on the affected
area. To use, place a couple drops of the oil on a clean cotton ball, placing it against the affected tooth until you experience some relief from the pain.
- Hydrogen Peroxide – Swishing with some hydrogen peroxide may also prove helpful. It may help to eliminate some of the discomfort you’re experiencing while killing bacteria in your mouth. However, you need to avoid swallowing the hydrogen peroxide.
Although you can use these remedies to deal with your toothache pain, you need to get to your dentist as soon as possible. A toothache is a serious problem and should be addressed by a qualified dentist to prevent further dental problems.
